FoM: A mathematical community working to strengthen student achievement
In Focus on Mathematics (FOM),
teachers remember what it's like to be a student
again by struggling with advanced topics of mathematics. In so doing, they also experience what it's like to be a mathematician. Working alongside mathematicians and mathematics educators, teachers immediately become part of a mathematical community that enables them to grasp the psychological subtleties of applying
mathematics to the craft of teaching and improve their students' achievement.
This video opens in a number theory class that is part of a six-week summer immersion called PROMYS (Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists). As the video
unfolds, the themes of Focus on Mathematics become apparent: that exploration, experimentation, invention, and discovery of deep mathematics allow participants
to connect mathematical ideas across the curriculum, further their students' learning, and more generally deal with the unexpected in their classroom.
