In Spring 2008, UMass Lowell will introduce a Mathematics Mentoring course for math majors and minors. Designed by Professor Ken Levasseur, this course will be a two-part service-learning course. Students will work on their own mathematics research projects for the first half of the semester and act as mentors within our Focus on Mathematics districts during the second half of the semester, helping students in grades 6-12 develop research projects for the local math fairs. For the last four years, UMass Lowell students have been involved with Focus on Mathematics as mentors in the math fairs on the district level. The introduction of the Mathematics Mentoring course will institutionalize mentoring by students and help sustain the Focus on Mathematics program.
