Each of the five partner districts hosts one seminar during the academic
year. Seminars are open to teachers and faculty from every partner,
including special education teachers, counselors, and undergraduates in
teacher preparation programs
These seminars are significant in a number of ways: They offer teachers in
both middle and high schools opportunities to explore mathematical problems
and increase their depth of understanding, thus providing them with better
content knowledge and more confidence in their teaching. Furthermore,
teachers from the same districts and schools have the opportunity and time
to work with their colleagues to solve problems and discuss applications in
the classroom, thereby forming a strong, connected mathematical community.
The seminars are designed to leverage time teachers already spend in
professional activities: lesson planning, developing activities and
projects for students, assessing student work, and preparing for current
and future teaching assignments. As the partnership matures, the corps of
Mathematics Teaching Fellows will partner with our higher education faculty
to design and implement these programs.
