Current:   2007-2008
Archive:   2003-2004    2004-2005    2005-2006

Study groups allow teachers and mathematicians to learn from each other and work on topics of mutual interest. These groups meet face-to-face at least once a month, supplemented with classroom visits and electronic communication.

The study group topics are always driven by the needs and concerns of the teachers.

Study Group Topics

Middle School

Examples of study group topics explored in the middle schools include:

  • Pascal's Triangle
  • Number Games
  • Methods of Logical Thinking
  • Linearity
  • Geometry Measurement: MCAS Topics
  • Math Fair Projects
  • Factoring
  • Math Explorations using Technology

High School

Examples of study group topics explored in the high schools include:

  • Geometry Area Algorithms
  • Algebra
  • Spreadsheets
  • AP Calculus

Highlights

  • Allen Olsen will have a paper in the August 2006 issue of Mathematics Teacher the NCTM national journal for high school teachers), reporting on the work of last year's 2005 LHS study group with Al Cuoco (EDC).

  • Steve Rosenberg (BU), Michael Spillane (Watertown HS), and Daniel B. Wulf (Watertown HS): "Fostering Mathematical Research by Teachers." Joint Meetings of AMS/MAA, San Antonio, TX, January 12, 2006.

This presentation is the result of work done in the Watertown High School Focus on Mathematics study group during 2005.

  • Dick Gerst presented a paper to Lawrence HS mathematics teachers (January 10, 2006) based on spreadsheet routines that he developed in collaboration with Bob Devaney (BU) in a LHS study group.

  • Daniel B. Wulf (Watertown HS), Michael Spillane (Watertown HS) and Steve Rosenberg (BU): "Voting Schemes: Same Election, Different Results." NCTM Eastern Regional Conference, Hartford, CT, October 6–8, 2005. Read more...
