Math Fair Prep: Introductory Talks

In preparation for the 2005 Math Fairs, nearly two dozen visits were scheduled with district-wide mathematics teachers and the FoM mathematicians and educators. A few highlights are noted below.

Ken Levasseur paved the way at the Oliver middle school in Lawrence beginning on February 2, 2005 where he visited with the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes and met with over 250 students. The Oliver School's Math Coach, Pat Nastasi, helped coordinate these valuable presentations. In addition, an 8th grade student, Cassandra Abou-Farah, who was a presenter in the 2004 Math Expo, talked about mathematical projects and her own personal experience to the 8th grade class.

Lawrence school presentations continued at the Wetherbee School on February 7, 2005 where Al Cuoco and Wetherbee Math Coach Kent Werst gave an introductory talk to over 100 6th graders about math projects and how to explore ideas in the world around them.

In Lawrence, Ken Levasseur also visited over 240 students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade at the Parthum School along with Parthum Math Coach Luby Vidrine on February 28, 2005.

Also in Lawrence, Marvin Stick and Arlington Math Coach Ellen Murray met with six 8th grade classes and presented a set of overheads with problems, tricks, and projects that Donna Chevaire, District Mathematics Principal, had suggested.

In addition, Marvin Freedman worked with Guilmette mathematics teachers and focused on math fair projects in his monthly study group meetings. Al Doerr met with students at South Lawrence East about their projects. And Bob Devaney met with students at the high school in a Geometry class taught by A.J. Vera and discussed project ideas with them.

In Watertown, Dick Hall and Steve Rosenberg along with Watertown's Curriculum Coordinator, Chuck Garabedian, met with high school students from the Algebra and Geometry classes and introduced many project suggestions. Dick Hall also met with June Leone at the alternative high school in Watertown and discussed project ideas that she could use in her class.

In Waltham, Dick Hall met with all of the mathematics teachers in a faculty meeting facilitated by Eileen Herlihy, Waltham's Mathematics Director, and discussed how to assign and mentor projects.

In Arlington, Art Heinricher met with the middle school teachers in a meeting facilitated by Kathy Bodie, Arlington's Mathematics Coordinator, and discussed how to best fir the project's into the teachers' classes.

Also in Arlington, Emma Previato led a study group for Ottoson Middle School students on math expo projects. Many of these exceptional students' projects were selected for exhibit in the Math Expo.

In Chelsea, Glenn Stevens assisted Kathy Foulser as she led a series of weekly Noon Shadow projects for 6th graders.

Math Fairs

  • 12 District Math Fairs displayed student research projects beginning in April 2005. All five district high schools and eight middle schools participated.

  • A team of FoM Mathematicians were always available to work with teachers and principals to facilitate the poster evaluation and review process at each Math Fair. This team included:

    Steve Benson
    Al Cuoco
    Robert Devaney
    Al Doerr
    Marvin Freedman
    James Graham-Eagle
    Dick Hall
    Arthur Heinricher
    Art Johnson
    Kenneth Levasseur
    Steve Rosenberg
    Glenn Stevens
    Marvin Stick
    Bogdan Vernescu
    Suzanne Weekes

  • Marvin Stick and UMASS Lowell student Andrew Laroque mentored students in Lawrence's Arlington School for three months leading up to the Math Fair. These students produced a Math Fair with 33 projects and an overall participation of 65 students! Arlington's Math Coach, Ellen Murray, and Principal Beth Qualter contributed to this great success story. Read more about the students' projects.

 Special Exhibit: June 13 – June 22, 2005

Math Expo

The Math Expo was held Saturday, June 11, 2005, from noon to 5:00 PM at the Museum of Science, Skyline Room.

Top projects from each district's Math Fair were selected to be on display at the Math Expo. Teachers notified the parents of these students and the Museum of Science event was announced to everyone in the class with an invitation to come and enjoy the poster displays, the reception, and receive free exhibit passes to the Museum of Science.

A Special Museum of Science Exhibit representing a range of district-wide mathematical projects remained on display from June 13 to June 22 in the Blue Wing Gallery.

Highlights

  • 996 students participated in a math research project.

  • 592 research projects were displayed in Math Fairs.

  • 63 research projects (with a combined effort of 116 students) were selected for display at the Math Expo.

  • All 116 students involved in the Math Expo received at least two personal letters of citation from their local congressmen.

  • A Special Exhibit remained at the Boston Museum of Science in the Blue Wing Gallery from June 13 to June 22, 2005, displaying 8 research projects (a combined effort of 15 students) as a representation of the mathematical research projects.

The Expo was a culmination of many events that contributed to its success. Due to the collaboration between teachers, administrators, mathematicians and parents it was a shared community experience that has strengthened our partnership and our mutual commitment to student achievement.
