Math Fair Prep: Introductory Talks

In preparation for the 2006 Math Fairs, nearly two dozen visits were scheduled with district-wide mathematics teachers and the FoM mathematicians and educators. A few highlights are noted below.

An introduction to Math Fair preparation was presented at the Waltham seminar on November 9, 2005.

On January 23, 2006, Art Heinricher facilitated a professional development day and lead a discussion on Math Fair preparation for Chelsea middle school teachers. We are especially grateful to Kathy Foulser, Mathematics Curriculum Specialist (Clark Ave. School, Chelsea) for coordinating and organizing this effort.

On January 27, 2006, Art Heinricher and Dick Hall led a Math Fair Workshop in Lawrence for middle school and high school mathematics teachers. We are grateful to Donna Chevaire, District Mathematics Principal, for facilitating this effort.

On February 16, 2006, Art Heinricher and Dick Hall led a Math Fair Workshop in Waltham for middle school and high school mathematics teachers. We are grateful to Eileen Herlihy, Waltham Mathematics Director, for facilitating this effort.

Mathematicians and Educators continued to visit schools to launch the Expo and begin introducing students to an array of possible research projects.

Math Fairs

  • 16 District Math Fairs displayed student research projects beginning in April 2006. Four district high schools and twelve middle schools participated.

  • A team of FoM Mathematicians were always available to work with teachers and principals to facilitate the poster evaluation and review process at each Math Fair.

Math Expo

The Math Expo was held Saturday, June 10, 2006, from noon to 5:00 PM at the Museum of Science, the Pavilion.

Top projects from each district's Math Fair were selected to be on display at the Math Expo. Teachers notified the parents of these students and the Museum of Science event was announced to everyone in the class with an invitation to come and enjoy the poster displays, the reception, and receive free exhibit passes to the Museum of Science.

A Special Museum of Science Exhibit representing a range of district-wide mathematical projects remained on display from June 11 to June 18.

Highlights

  • 2048 students participated in a math research project.

  • 1188 research projects were displayed in Math Fairs.

  • 102 research projects (with a combined effort of 179 students) were selected for display at the Math Expo.

  • All 179 students involved in the Math Expo received at least two personal letters of citation from their local congressmen.

  • A Special Exhibit remained at the Boston Museum of Science from June 11 to June 18, 2006, displaying several students' research projects.

The Expo was a culmination of many events that contributed to its success. Due to the collaboration between teachers, administrators, mathematicians and parents it was a shared community experience that has strengthened our partnership and our mutual commitment to student achievement.
