          :: Math Expo Project Guidelines::

Presentation

Projects should fit on a standard poster. All printing should be visible from several feet away (LARGE print). All picture/graphs should be labeled and captioned. Folders should fold flat. Oversized posters and extra objects are difficult to manage. If you find that accessories are necessary to illustrate a point, please keep them small and not too heavy.

Statement of the Idea/Question

The project idea/motivating questions should be clearly stated. (Best if this is in your own words and emphasizes which aspect of the problem you address in your poster.) START with the general motivation of the project, THEN give specific questions.

(e.g., "What shape glass tips over easiest" is a general question. "We look at some standard shape glasses." is specific.

Or

"How much must I save to go to college?" is a general question. "If I deposit $100 every month in a bank account at 5%, starting at birth, will I have enough?" is specific.)

Methods

Ideas should be highlighted — WHAT you did and WHY you did it. Remember the "Why". Explanations should be in sentences.

Results

Your conclusions and partial results. (Partial results to a hard problem are just as important as complete solutions of an easy problem.) Write in sentences.

Next Step

  • What can you do with your results? (For example, if you come up with a general formula for some quantity, compute some examples.)
  • What would you do/try next?
  • What question(s) would you ask next?
