Mathematics and Simple Origami

Take a piece of square paper. Pick a point on the paper and fold the corners of the square so that they just touch the point. We want to study the resulting shape.

  Getting Started
  1. How many sides will the resulting piece of paper have?
  2. What are the maximum number and minimum number of sides (as you change the chosen point)?
  Going Deeper

As you move the chosen point around, where do the number of sides of the resulting folded paper change? Describe where the number changes as clearly as possible.

What if you repeat the process? (That is, once the paper is folded, choose another point (or even the same point) and fold the corners in again.)
